Hispanics in Nursing The National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) is profiling Hispanic nurses in a new radio campaign -- Carreras en Enfermería / Hispanics in Nursing -- to spark the interest of persons looking for rewarding and fulfilling career opportunities to grow professionally as a nurse.
Featured Role Model
Maria Curbelo
Maria Curbelo is from Chandler, Arizona and recently graduated from Mesa Community College. Her husband recommended a career in nursing but she felt her understanding of science was weak for a career in nursing. After doing some investigating on her own, she realized that nursing was a career that gave her an opportunity to help others, while utilizing her skillset. Maria realized that she was putting up barriers that did not exist. She chose to look deep inside herself and stop what she calls “stinking thinking” or giving in to negative thoughts.
Out of the 3,000,000 registered nurses in the U.S., Hispanics represent only 3.6% even though Hispanics make up 17% of the U.S. population. Many Hispanic students and parents are not aware of the multiple opportunities that exist in the nursing fields.
